Description: Samoa Air, which says it's the first carrier in the world to charge passengers by their weight rather than per seat, introduces an 'XL Class' for people who weigh more than 130 kilograms. Story: Samoa Air is the world's first carrier to charge passengers by weight, rather than per seat. [Passenger, Samoan Air]: "I kind of felt crazy when I heard about jump on the scales. I was like, what? Jump on the scales, but it's all good, it's not that bad." They're now looking after their larger customers. [Chris Langton, Samoa Air Chief]: "We can fit two fairly large people in there, heavy people in there and it's comfortable for both. We've actually taken out a complete row of seats and replaced it so there is much more leg room for the passenger, there's no armrest." The airline...

To the west are the islands of the Wallis and Futuna group. The total land area is 199 square kilometers (76.8 sq mi), slightly more than Washington, D.C. WELLINGTON (AFP) - The head of a tiny Pacific airline that pioneered a fare system based on passengers' weight said on Wednesday the move had been so successful the carrier is upgrading its fleet. Samoa Air introduced its world-first system late last year, when it began charging passengers fares based on how much they weigh, rather than a set price for each seat. The rates range from about US$1 (S$1.25) a kilogramme on the airline's shortest domestic route to about US$4.16 per kilogramme. Chief executive Chris Langton said the charge had proved popular over the first 12 months as it meant cheaper fares for most passengers. - See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/world/story/samoa-airlines-pay-weight-fares-take-passengers-20131211#sthash.uy0LzJsu.dpuf

The carrier boasts that they are the world's first airline to charge passengers by weight versus seats. Passengers are charged a combined fee based on bodyweight and baggage per kilogram -- at a rate dependent on flight length. [Chris Langton, Samoa Air CEO]: "Once people have acknowledged that the aeroplane runs by weight and not by seats it makes it a lot easier for them to understand and also by the time they come back to us a second time around they have had time to digest that information and recognise that its actually the fairest possible system of air carriage that's available." One customer says i...
Shots from my visit to American Samoa last August. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to go there to film this tropical jungle paradise in the far-flung pacific islands. The people there are some of the most happy, wonderful, gracious and generous people I've ever met.
